Affected by epidemic situation, Russia-Ukraine war, inflation escalation and global economic slowdown, the market demand in Europe, Central Asia, Africa and North America continued to decline. The export growth of sewing machinery in China in the first five months was slower than that at the end of the first quarter.

General situation of export and sub-products

According to the data of the General Administration of Customs, from January to May, the cumulative export volume of sewing machinery products in China was USD 1.382 billion, a year-on-year increase of 12.57%, which was 4.87 percentage points slower than that at the end of the first quarter. Among them, the export volume of industrial sewing machines was 2.13 million units, with an export value of 762 million USD, up by 10.83% and 29.35% respectively. The relaxation of epidemic prevention restrictions in major overseas countries and the full restoration of normal production and living order have led to a sharp decline in the demand for home appliances, with the export volume and value of home appliances dropping by 43.08% and 40.42% year-on-year.

In May, China’s sewing machinery exports reached USD 293 million, up 9.34% year-on-year and 5.82% month-on-month. Among them, the export volume of industrial sewing machines was 450,000 sets, with an export value of USD 160 million, up by 5.43% and 20.15% year-on-year, and the export value increased by 5.74% and 2.57% month-on-month.

In May, China’s exports to Asia and South America increased year-on-year, while its exports to Europe, Africa, North America and Oceania all showed a year-on-year decline. Among the regional markets, China’s exports to “the belt and road initiative” market reached 948 million USD, up 23.65% year-on-year, accounting for 68.59% of the industry’s exports, up 6.15 percentage points over the same period of last year. The export volume to RECP market reached 489 million USD, up by 22.91% year-on-year, accounting for 35.38% of the industry’s export volume, up by 2.98 percentage points over the same period of last year; Exports to ASEAN market were 415 million USD, up by 32.80% year on year, and exports to South Asia market were 316 million USD, up by 31.00% year on year; Exports to the West Asian market reached USD 129 million, up by 46.93% year-on-year; Exports to the EU market were USD 71 million, down 22.08% year-on-year; Exports to the East Asian market were USD 68 million, down 14.72% year-on-year, and exports to the Central Asian market were USD 30 million, down 5.51% year-on-year.
In terms of specific countries, Vietnam and India remained the top two sewing equipment export markets in China in the first five months. China’s exports to Vietnam amounted to US$ 183 million, up 15.47% year on year, accounting for 13.26% of China’s industrial exports; Exports to India amounted to USD 160 million, up by 32.14% year on year, accounting for 11.58% of China’s industrial exports; Bangladesh is China’s third largest export market at present. In the first five months, China exported 78.25 million USD to it, up 67.46% year-on-year, accounting for 5.66% of China’s industrial exports. In addition, in the first five months of this year, China’s exports to Pakistan, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Myanmar and other markets increased significantly, while its exports to the United States, Japan, Brazil, Russia, South Korea and other markets declined significantly.

In May, China’s sewing machinery exports showed a polarized trend: on the one hand, with the return of international textile and garment manufacturing, the demand for sewing equipment in ASEAN, South Asia and other markets increased rapidly, driving the growth of industry exports. In May, exports to ASEAN increased by 26.75% year-on-year and 5.75% month-on-month. Exports to Vietnam increased by 22.91% year-on-year and 0.57% month-on-month; Exports to India increased by 101.31% year-on-year and 33.16% quarter-on-quarter; Exports to Bangladesh increased by 147.94% year-on-year and 50.06% month-on-month; In addition, the export of sewing machinery to Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, United Arab Emirates and other major markets showed double-digit growth year-on-year, and the export to Argentina, Myanmar and other markets even doubled. Among them, 18,000 industrial sewing machines were imported, with an import value of USD 43.37 million, down by 18.84% and 12.83% respectively; Household sewing machines imported 39,000 sets, up 7.42% year-on-year, with an import value of 2.87 million USD, down 12.29% year-on-year; Before and after sewing, 16,681 sets of equipment were imported, with an import value of USD 322 million, up by 57.38% and 1.67% respectively.
